Nespresso Caffeine Calculator: Original vs Vertuo
Nespresso publishes caffeine as a range per pod format, not a single number per blend — because coffee is an agricultural product and caffeine shifts crop to crop. This calculator works the way Nespresso's own figures do: pick your line and format, get the honest range.
How much caffeine is in a Nespresso pod? An Original espresso pod contains roughly 55–65 mg and an Original lungo about 77–85 mg. Vertuo spans far wider — from around 60–100 mg for an espresso pod up to 200 mg or more for the 18 oz Carafe pod. The line itself matters less than the cup size you're brewing.
The intensity number on the sleeve is not caffeine
This is the single most common Nespresso misconception. That 1–13 rating measures roast depth, body and bitterness — it is a flavour scale. An intensity 13 pod can easily carry less caffeine than an intensity 4 pod, because lighter roasts and lungo capsules often hold more coffee. What actually predicts caffeine is the amount of ground coffee in the capsule and the size of the cup you pull through it.

Official format rangesRobusta-heavy blends include Kazaar and Napoli on Original, and Diavolitto and Il Caffè on Vertuo.
in one Original espresso pod
Ranges follow Nespresso's own published guidance by cup size and coffee dose. Nespresso does not publish an exact figure per blend, so any chart claiming a single precise number for a named pod is estimating. Extraction temperature, water hardness and crop variation all move the real value.
Every format on one scale
Laid out against a shared axis, the real relationship becomes obvious. The two lines overlap heavily at the small end — an Original espresso and a Vertuo espresso are close cousins. Vertuo pulls ahead only because it offers formats Original doesn't have.
So is Vertuo actually stronger?
Per pod, usually yes — but that framing is misleading. A Vertuo espresso and an Original espresso land in a similar place. The gap opens because Vertuo capsules for larger formats contain substantially more ground coffee: an Original pod holds 5–6 g, while the biggest Vertuo pods hold roughly twice that or more. You aren't getting a stronger coffee so much as a bigger one. If you brewed an Original lungo and a Vertuo Gran Lungo side by side, the caffeine per fluid ounce would be much closer than the per-pod totals suggest.
Nespresso caffeine by pod format
Original Line — ristretto, espresso, lungo
| Format | Cup size | Coffee dose | Caffeine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ristretto | 0.85 oz / 25 ml | ~5 g | 55–65 mg |
| Espresso | 1.35 oz / 40 ml | ~5 g | 55–65 mg |
| Lungo | 3.7 oz / 110 ml | ~6 g | 77–85 mg |
| Robusta-heavy blends (Kazaar, Napoli) | 0.85–1.35 oz | ~5 g | 120–125 mg |
| Decaffeinato, any format | — | 5–6 g | Under 3 mg |
A lungo isn't simply a longer espresso. The capsule holds an extra gram of coffee and the longer 110 ml extraction pulls more caffeine out of it, which is why it lands 20 mg or so above an espresso pod rather than double.
Vertuo Line — espresso through carafe
| Format | Cup size | Caffeine |
|---|---|---|
| Espresso | 1.35 oz / 40 ml | 60–100 mg |
| Double Espresso | 2.7 oz / 80 ml | 100–150 mg |
| Gran Lungo | 5 oz / 150 ml | 120–200 mg |
| Mug / Coffee | 7.77 oz / 230 ml | 170–200 mg |
| Alto XL | 14 oz / 414 ml | 170–200 mg |
| Carafe Pour-Over Style | 18 oz / 535 ml | Over 200 mg |
| Robusta-heavy espresso (Diavolitto, Il Caffè) | 1.35 oz | Up to 150 mg |
| Half Caffeinato | 7.77 oz | 80–90 mg |
| Decaffeinato | — | 4–12 mg |
The Mug and Alto XL formats share a caffeine range despite Alto being nearly twice the volume — the extra water dilutes rather than extracts more. That makes Alto the weaker drink per mouthful even though the pod total is the same.
Popular pods by name — approximate figures
These per-blend numbers circulate widely online and trace back to an archived regional Nespresso page rather than current global guidance. They're useful for relative ranking — which pods are stronger than which — but treat them as approximate, not measured.
| Pod | Line | Approx. caffeine |
|---|---|---|
| Kazaar | Original | ~120–125 mg |
| Fortissio Lungo | Original | ~85 mg |
| Vivalto Lungo, Linizio Lungo | Original | ~80 mg |
| Arpeggio, Roma, Livanto, Capriccio, Volluto, Cosi | Original | ~60 mg |
| Ristretto, Ristretto Italiano | Original | ~60 mg |
| Any Decaffeinato | Original | Under 3 mg |
| Intenso, Fortado | Vertuo | ~195 mg |
| Stormio, Melozio | Vertuo | ~170 mg |
| Melozio Boost, Stormio Boost | Vertuo | ~200 mg |
| Double Espresso Scuro | Vertuo | ~150 mg |
| Diavolitto | Vertuo | ~150 mg |
| Double Espresso Chiaro | Vertuo | ~135 mg |
| Altissio | Vertuo | ~108 mg |
| Voltesso | Vertuo | ~60 mg |
| Half Caffeinato | Vertuo | ~80–90 mg |
| Any Decaffeinato | Vertuo | 4–12 mg |
Original vs Vertuo: which should you buy?
If caffeine is the deciding factor, the question isn't really which line is stronger. It's which cup sizes you actually want to drink.
| Original | Vertuo | |
|---|---|---|
| Caffeine range per pod | ~55–125 mg | ~60–230 mg |
| Coffee in the capsule | 5–6 g | 5–13 g |
| Cup sizes | 3 (25, 40, 110 ml) | 6 (40 ml to 535 ml) |
| Extraction | High-pressure, like a traditional espresso machine | Centrifusion — the capsule spins at speed |
| Third-party pods | Widely available, often cheaper | Restricted by the barcode system |
| Best if you want | Real espresso, tight caffeine control, cheaper pods | Mug-sized coffee and crema, one-button large formats |
| Caffeine ceiling | Kazaar at ~125 mg | Carafe pod at over 200 mg |
If you're trying to keep caffeine down
- Original gives you more control. The whole line sits in a narrow 55–85 mg band, so you always roughly know what you're drinking.
- On Vertuo, watch the format, not the blend. Switching from a Mug pod to an espresso pod cuts more caffeine than any blend change will.
- Ignore the intensity number entirely. Choosing a milder-tasting pod does not reliably reduce caffeine.
- Half Caffeinato is the honest middle option if you want a full mug without a full dose.
- Decaf is not zero, but at under 3 mg on Original it is close enough not to matter for almost anyone.
How Nespresso compares to other coffee
| Drink | Caffeine |
|---|---|
| Nespresso Vertuo Carafe pod (18 oz) | Over 200 mg |
| Nespresso Vertuo Mug pod (7.77 oz) | 170–200 mg |
| Starbucks Pike Place brewed (Grande) | 310 mg |
| Drip coffee, 12 oz home brew | ~145 mg |
| Nespresso Vertuo Double Espresso | 100–150 mg |
| Drip coffee, 8 oz | ~95 mg |
| Nespresso Original lungo | 77–85 mg |
| Red Bull (8.4 oz) | 80 mg |
| Café espresso shot | ~64 mg |
| Nespresso Original espresso | 55–65 mg |
| Black tea, 8 oz | ~47 mg |
| Coca-Cola (12 oz) | ~34 mg |
Two Original espressos come in under a single 8 oz mug of drip coffee. One Vertuo Mug pod is roughly two mugs of drip. That spread inside a single brand, from pods that look nearly identical in the sleeve, is the practical reason a calculator like this is worth having.
How many Nespresso pods a day is safe?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration cites 400 mg a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects in healthy adults. What that means in pods depends entirely on format.
| Pod type | Pods to reach 400 mg |
|---|---|
| Original espresso (60 mg) | About 6–7 |
| Original lungo (81 mg) | About 5 |
| Original Kazaar (122 mg) | About 3 |
| Vertuo espresso (80 mg) | About 5 |
| Vertuo Gran Lungo (160 mg) | About 2–3 |
| Vertuo Mug (185 mg) | About 2 |
| Vertuo Carafe (215 mg) | Under 2 |
Commonly cited ceilings are lower for some groups: around 200 mg a day in pregnancy, and roughly 100 mg for adolescents. Sensitivity varies a great deal between individuals, and genetics, medication, tolerance and pregnancy all shift where your own limit sits. Treat these as population-level guidance rather than a personal number, and talk to a doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, have a heart condition or anxiety disorder, or take medication that interacts with stimulants.
Nespresso caffeine: frequently asked questions
How much caffeine is in a Nespresso pod?
It depends on the format. An Original espresso pod holds roughly 55–65 mg and an Original lungo 77–85 mg. Vertuo ranges from about 60–100 mg for an espresso pod to over 200 mg for the 18 oz Carafe pod.
Does Vertuo have more caffeine than Original?
Per pod, generally yes, but mainly because Vertuo offers much larger cup sizes with more ground coffee in the capsule. Compared like for like — a Vertuo espresso against an Original espresso — the two are close. Vertuo's advantage is volume, not concentration.
Does the Nespresso intensity number mean more caffeine?
No. The 1–13 intensity rating describes roast depth, body and bitterness. It is a flavour scale with no reliable relationship to caffeine. An intensity 13 pod can contain less caffeine than an intensity 4 pod.
Which Nespresso pod has the most caffeine?
The Vertuo Carafe Pour-Over Style pod, at over 200 mg. Among smaller formats, Vertuo Intenso and Fortado sit around 195 mg, and on the Original line Kazaar leads at roughly 120–125 mg.
How much caffeine is in a Nespresso lungo?
An Original lungo pod contains about 77–85 mg. The capsule holds an extra gram of coffee compared with an espresso pod and extracts over 110 ml rather than 40 ml.
How much caffeine is in a decaf Nespresso pod?
Decaf is not zero. Original Decaffeinato pods contain under 3 mg, and Vertuo decaf pods roughly 4–12 mg. That's low enough to be irrelevant for nearly everyone, including most people who are caffeine-sensitive.
Is a Nespresso pod stronger than a cup of coffee?
An Original espresso at around 60 mg is weaker than an 8 oz drip coffee at around 95 mg. A Vertuo Mug pod at 170–200 mg is roughly double a drip coffee. The answer flips entirely depending on which pod you mean.
Why doesn't Nespresso publish exact caffeine numbers?
Because coffee is an agricultural product and caffeine content varies by crop, origin and harvest. Nespresso publishes ranges by cup size and coffee dose instead. Any chart giving a single exact figure for a named blend is estimating from older regional data or independent testing.
Does a bigger Vertuo cup size mean more caffeine?
Up to a point. Larger formats use capsules with more ground coffee, so caffeine rises from espresso to Gran Lungo to Mug. But the Mug and the much larger Alto XL share the same range, because beyond a certain volume the extra water dilutes rather than extracting more.
How many Nespresso pods a day is too many?
Against the FDA's 400 mg guideline for healthy adults, that's roughly six Original espressos, five Original lungos, or two Vertuo Mug pods. Lower ceilings are commonly cited in pregnancy, around 200 mg.
