Why your baby's age changes the picture
The amount of caffeine that crosses into milk is fairly constant regardless of your baby's age. What changes dramatically is how quickly your baby clears whatever they receive.

This is the main reason the same cup of coffee is treated more cautiously in the first few weeks postpartum than it is a few months in — not because the transfer percentage changes, but because a newborn's body holds onto whatever it receives for much longer.
Timing can help more than cutting the dose
Caffeine peaks in breast milk about 1–2 hours after you drink it. Some parents find it easier to have coffee right after a feed rather than right before one, giving levels more time to fall before the next nursing session — though with a newborn's slow clearance, spacing has a smaller effect than it does for an older baby.
Signs your baby may be sensitive to caffeine
Most breastfed babies show no reaction at all to ordinary maternal caffeine intake. A minority of babies are more sensitive, and the signs reported in the research are:

Does caffeine affect milk supply?
There's no strong evidence that moderate caffeine intake reduces milk supply. Very high intake — above roughly 450 mg a day — has been associated with modestly lower iron levels in breast milk in some research, which is one reason very heavy intake is worth moderating regardless of how your baby seems to tolerate it.
What about one heavy day — a wedding, a rough night, a work deadline?
An occasional day above your usual intake is a different question from a sustained daily habit. A single higher day is unlikely to cause a problem in an otherwise healthy, older infant; the main added caution is with newborns, whose slow clearance means a big dose has more time to build up before it clears.
Does it matter if my baby was born early?

Energy drinks and pre-workout
These often combine caffeine with other stimulants and much higher doses per serving than a cup of coffee, and haven't been as well studied in lactation.
